I really enjoy giving tuition very, very much! The feeling we get when my kids and I work together to learn concepts and solve challenging questions is truly satisfying! Hence I always make lessons engaging and make concepts easy to take in. I hope that my kids can see that the Maths and the Sciences are actually not just simple to grasp, but are also very interesting and very fun to learn.

I love teaching kids and I am really patient with them. I use a variety of methods to make sure that my kids can understand concepts well before we move on. Therefore, I use different ways to tutor each student, and even for each subject or topic that we cover. This is because everyone has very different learning methods, learning speeds, personalities and levels of proficiency in each subject or topic, so I believe that teaching methods should be custom-made to fit each student for each subject and each topic, to ensure that the child can learn and understand his subject matter well. I will fine tune my approach as the lesson progresses and as I better understand how the child learns. I am entirely flexible with different teaching methods and am comfortable with revising the topics, going through topical questions in assessment books, going through past year papers or any other method. It is best if the child knows himself/herself well enough to know which method is the most suitable for him/her, so that I can immediately help him/her in this way.

My favourite students are kids who are not as strong in their studies. They may not have a good grasp of fundamentals, and so when they finally learn and understand the techniques, and suddenly find that questions become easy to solve, they become very delighted with themselves! I find it really satisfying to teach them and know that at the end of every lesson, they have learnt so much. Of course, for better learning, students should have good attitudes and be open minded and willing to learn a subject they used to find difficulty with in the past, because once they can overcome their low confidence with the subject and break down any mental barrier, the subject will naturally become very easy to handle. Two kids I have recently helped through the mid-years exams had great attitudes and were very diligent, so they were able to pull up their own grades significantly with a bit of my help (They both each had only less than five 1.5 hour-long lessons with me prior to their SA1). One of them improved to B3 for both his maths and science and they were his top scoring subjects for SA1. The other student's science grades improved by 10+ marks from 40+ in CA1 to 50+ marks in SA1, and her maths grades leaped by 20+ marks from 20+ to 50+ marks.

Eventually, I hope to work together with the students and the parents as a team to make learning a fun-filled and rewarding experience!

StarTutor's Review

Hao Ran comes across as a warm and sincere person who would do his utmost best once he commits himself to it. Although he has just started tutoring early this year, Hao Ran has already taken up many assignments and has started to love teaching.

While being a student, Hao Ran has experiences of encountering teachers using different styles that he was not able to understand. However, when one of his friends sat him down and used simple terms to explain the concepts, Hao Ran was able to grasp them fully. This motivates him to assist students in better understanding with simple explanation.

One of Hao Ran's current student is one with low confidence and morale. She had been demoralised by her continuous failing grades and inability to solve the questions. Hao Ran motivates her little by little, giving her Math questions to do with minimum guidance. Slowly, with Hao Ran’s consistent encouragements, she has managed to solve Math questions with her own ability and this becomes a great boost to her morale.

Hao Ran believes in building up foundations before moving on to advance questions. He likes to analyze his students' steps of tackling the question and recognize their weaknesses. With this, he will solve the question with the student and at the same time, improvise the students' exam tactics.

Hao Ran focuses on Secondary level as he finds the age gap most comfortable. He becomes more of a friend or a big brother to them and strives to help them with their worries as well as academic studies. With an extremely pleasant personality, Hao Ran maintains his belief that patience is the key. He constantly reminds himself that with a change of mentality, every student can and is able to produce good academic results.
