Huiyuan says
I am currently a school teacher who is trained in teaching Mathematics and EL, however I have experience in teaching other subjects, such as science.
If possible, I would keep lessons interesting so as to keep students motivated. As such, for weaker students especially, I would try to give students different things to work on instead of simply giving practices/papers. For students who are studying for their major exams, I will point out mistakes commonly made by students, and I try to come up with summaries or notes to help them. I prefer to come up with my own resources, or modify available ones, to cater to my students' needs.
I have been tutoring since my undergraduate days in 2005, though I took a break for 2-3 years to concentrate on my teaching at my current school.
Under my coaching, I have helped several students improve in their grades. Some examples include
1. A secondary 4 student improved in her combined science grade from an F9 to B3 within half a year when she sought my help before her O levels.
2. A sec 2 NA student improved his Mathematics from a failing grade to grade 1.
3. A P5 student improved her EL grades from a failing one to a passing mark.
4. A P6 student improved his Band 2 grade in EL to a Band 1 grade.
StarTutor's Review
Huiyuan is a NUS undergrad under the University Scholar Program. She comes to us as a polite and reserved lady. Huiyuan is keen in acquiring new knowledge and skills besides her school mathematics studies. She has immense interest in foreign languages and thus taken up diversified courses in university such as English, French, and Literature. After her graduation, she will be continuing her study at Singapore's National Institute of Education and will eventually be a teacher at a local school.
Huiyuan started giving tuition 3 years ago when she was introduced to a student by her friend. She found teaching to be interesting. In particular she likes to help weaker students to develop self-learning habits and becomes independent learner. She does not like to give students practice paper and would find creative ways to teach instead. For example, when teaching vocabulary, she plays crossword puzzle with her student. By incorporating a fun factor into learning, the student picks up new words faster.
She will also speak with the child and go through the exam papers with them to find out the progress of the child. She looks out for the common mistakes that the student makes and then work on that weakness. She also engages the parents to keep them updated on the child's progress. She keeps herself updated on the MOE syllabus through the MOE online website and from her classroom experiences.
Huiyuan enjoys learning, and has a strong interest in languages and music. Besides having a keen interest in learning, she keeps herself active in various sports like, hockey, soccer and handball. She is also a publicity and publications officer in NUS Hall Committee.
