Darren says

About 5 and a half years of tutoring experience (started off early 2001). Levels taught ranged from Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges, United World College SEA, as well as working adults. Have experience teaching foreigners written Chinese, spoken Mandarin as well as bahasa Indonesia.

StarTutor's Review

Darren is an uninhibited and confident individual. He has a keen interest in languages and so has knowledge of Basic Japanese, German and Bahasa Indonesia.

He specializes in Secondary Chemistry, Physics and Chinese as well as JC Chemistry. He also teaches Bahasa Indonesia for Beginners. For Chemistry, he teaches his tutees to recognize the different patterns in the chemical equations to aid them in solving the equations. He also teaches them how to classify the different chemicals and acids to aid them in memorizing their names. As Physics is intrinsically a theory-based subject, Darren explains the concepts until his tutee understands them.

Darren also tries to cater to the different needs of his tutees when teaching Chinese as they all come from different backgrounds. He notices that his tutees from English-speaking families commit the mistake of speaking Mandarin or writing Chinese the English way – translating English sentences into Chinese. He then corrects and teaches them proper Chinese grammar.

Having had his fair share of challenging tuition assignments where he had to deal with rebellious tutees, he believes that the tutor and parents have to work hand-in-hand in order for the tutee to improve.

Darren loves the outdoors and enjoys playing sports in his free time. He also enjoys traveling; he believes that the true joy of traveling can only be experienced through backpacking.

NUS Bachelor of Science (Life Sciences) with concentration in Biomedical Science.
