Experience/Remarks
I have taught O-Level English and Combined Humanities (Social Studies and History) for 5 years.
My approach to teaching English is organic. I tailor my lessons according to the weaknesses demonstrated by each student. I supplement this approach with a core syllabus. For example, I teach narrative perspectives, figures of speech, essay structure, etc for O-Lvl English. This syllabus is not meant to strictly dictate a fixed learning pattern for the student. Rather, it is meant to guide the student's progress, ensuring that core skills are covered with sufficient depth while paying heed to the student's particular weaknesses.
Further, I believe that requiring the student to do excessive amounts of written work during the tuition session itself is a waste of time. Instead, the student will be given weekly assignments to be done in my absence and handed in during the next tuition session. The assignment will usually be either a comprehension or a composition. Additionally, to bolster the student's vocabulary, he/she will be given weekly vocabulary exercises.
Language proficiency is all about exposure. To this end, I will recommend reading materials for the student. These range from fiction to newspaper and magazine articles. These readings will be pitched according to the student's abilities but will be challenging enough to sharpen the student's linguistic faculties.
Commitment Level
I prefer Sunday lessons. Thursday lessons should be fine too.
Mondays are out. All other days are negotiable.
